La tradición
Who is La Catrina?
She began as La Calavera Garbancera, an etching by the printmaker José Guadalupe Posada from around 1910 to 1913: an elegant skeleton in a grand European hat, poking fun at people who hid their roots.
Decades later, Diego Rivera painted her in a long dress at the heart of his 1947 mural Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central and gave her the name La Catrina.
Today she is the face of Día de Muertos on November 1 and 2, when families welcome back their loved ones. Painting your face as a Catrina is a joyful way to honor them.
